WELLINGTON ROAD

The transformation of a Victorian seafront warehouse in Portslade into live/work units, a private residence and artists’ studios.

The building had been empty and semi-derelict for years and had a long way to go before it became habitable, but equally we wanted to utilise its essential robustness and not to lose its distinctive industrial character.

Drawing inspiration from the goods yard below, we used utilitarian materials to form carefully crafted surfaces and cabinetry elements. Rather than dividing the open space into a series of enclosed rooms, we used felt and sheer curtains to suggest different areas of occupation.
